Part One!!

Sometimes you just shouldn’t “Go long” as two young Haven citizens learn in the opening scene of Survivors. While tossing a Frisbee in the local statue garden, an overthrow results in a macabre discovery: a statue that isn’t a statue. Because statues don’t crumble at the touch of a finger! Stevie really shouldn’t have touched it but boys….well, you know.

A short while later Nathan arrives on the scene to find a disgruntled Dwight. Nathan is clearly distracted by his search for Audrey but he attempts to assist the new Chief in determining what has happened. Turns out the “statue” is a charred body! I suppose the words “Spontaneous Combustion” were inevitable.

Dwight voices his disappointment that a body has been found in a public place on Founder’s Day. He had hoped things could get back to normal. Nathan asks: This isn’t normal? Nathan, when you’re right, you’re right!

We get a glimpse of Lexie in her barn bar, where she doesn’t seem terribly pleased to see that William is still around. If you only knew what was coming, Lexie!

At The Grey Gull, a yawning Jennifer informs Duke that Nathan kept her up all night discussing what she could remember about Audrey. It seems her memories are affected by the medications she is taking. Duke remarks that she is not crazy and should perhaps considering tossing them. Jennifer tries to explain what it was like hearing the voices nonstop for so long. Duke concedes that while it was only seconds for him it must have been “Six months of BARN radio playing the same song” for her.

Wade wanders up and mentions somebody tried to buy The Gull from him. “Vern and Dan?” he says. “Vince and Dave?” Duke asks. Obviously. Duke goes to investigate this turn of events and takes Jennifer with him.

At the morgue the charred body is identified as the sister of Bill Marigold, a firefighter who lost his life in a fire during the Hunter Meteor Storm. As seen in a photo, Bill’s body looks remarkably similar to that of his sister’s, which leads Dwight and Nathan to the conclusion this must be a family Trouble. A visit to the Haven FD is now in order as the Fire Chief is the father of the two victims.

Inside the office of the Haven Herald Duke is giving Vince hell for trying to buy The Gull. Vince makes it clear the Guard wants Wade out of town before he learns of “The Crocker Family Business.” Duke attempts to elicit a promise from Vince that his brother will be left alone. Vince counters by showing The Amazing Disappearing/Reappearing tattoo. Duke states Wade will be gone by nightfall, to which Vince remarks that Duke will then be the only Crocker with a target on his back.

Duke: It’s like you actually enjoy upsetting me! -

Vince: Everybody needs a hobby.

Me: Oh, Vince.

Part Two

Meanwhile, Jennifer has been making friends – sort of – with Dave who tries to explain how he and his brother cover up the Troubles so the rest of the world (and most of Haven) don’t know what is going on. “We have a lot of gas leaks” he tells her. Dave also believes Jennifer will be helpful in finding Audrey. It is at this point I start to hear Jennifer’s theme song: Under Pressure. I hope she can handle it!

Over at the fire station Nathan attempts to talk to Chief Marigold, who really doesn’t want to hear anything from the man he blames for The Troubles still being in Haven. He especially doesn’t want to hear Nathan suggesting his children died as a result of a Trouble of their own. Was anybody expecting this conversation to go well? I didn’t think so.

In a perfectly delightful moment during this episode we see Stan (I can’t help myself) Stan-ding up to Jordan, who is determined to talk to Dwight. Thankfully Dwight is nearby and intervenes. I would not have wanted to see Stan tazered. No, Jordan. Just, no.
Now we come to the Big Love conversation, the one from the preview, where William is earnestly discussing love with Lexie.

William: You’ve been in love before, right? Real love? Big love?

Lexie: No.

William: And yet, you feel it every day. It’s that ache in your heart, the weight. It’s for someone that you haven’t met in this lifetime.

Lexie is having none of this and tells William he needs to go.

In Haven, Jennifer and Duke are walking through town, and Jennifer is marveling at the “sweet looking town” which hides such troubling secrets. She asks Duke why he wants his brother to leave. Duke proceeds to tell of a sledding accident in which a boy who couldn’t feel (yes, THAT boy) breaks his arm. He explains how Wade was completely freaked out by this while Duke simply picked the kid up, took him to the hospital and went back to sledding. His point? Wade doesn’t belong in Haven because he can’t handle it. Jennifer wonders aloud what she might have done in the same situation. Duke tells her “you would have helped the kid. And then gone back sledding.” Then he grins. Ah, Duke. The things you do to my poor fangirl heart.

The two then part ways, one in search of saltwater taffy (our girl seems to have a sweet tooth) and the other to say goodbye to his brother.

When next we see Jennifer she is in the Black House Coffee shop, where she gets her coffee and leaves…without her taffy. Back inside she goes, to find four freshly charred corpses! At which point she screams, as one does when finding four freshly charred corpses.

Haven PD arrives and Nathan begins to question Jennifer but before he can get any answers she has a question of her own: WHERE’S DUKE? Nathan reassures her Duke will be located but in the meantime can we try to find out what you know? That cop gene is working overtime!

From the evidence on the scene and Jennifer’s information, Nathan determines the Troubled person is a firefighter. He wants to take Jennifer with him to the fire station to identify the man she saw leave the coffee shop.

Duke arrives and, upon hearing of Nathan’s plan, promptly gets in his face about interrogating the poor girl all night and now you want to take her Troubled hunting? What do you want from him, Duke? Nathan is trying to do his job!

Duke: I would prefer that the nice girl who broke me out of a mental institution not get killed because you screwed up. (This was my daughter’s favorite line of the episode. I promised her I’d tell you that and now I have.)

Part Three

In spite of Duke’s objections, to the station they go where, after another tense and unproductive conversation with the fire chief, Jennifer spies the Troubled man they are looking for in a photograph. His name is Don, and he was in the building with Bill Marigold when Bill was killed. Ah! A Guilt Trouble! That’s a new one. Jennifer doesn’t understand how the man can blame himself as it wasn’t his fault. With a look that says he knows what he’s talking about Nathan tells her: Guilt doesn’t have to be rational.

Off they go to find Don before he manages to immolate the entire town of Haven.

At the bar, Lexie is still being annoyed by the persistent William, who seems to think dismantling his hand gun is a good way to gain her trust. Lexie tells him to take his gun parts and leave. Before he can, the sinister little guy from last week’s episode returns – with a tall, menacing friend. Uh oh.

Nathan and Dwight are discussing how best to deal with Don when Nathan spots him. Since the man’s guilt is triggered by people being nice to him, Nathan suggests attempting to replace the guilt with a different emotion. The whole town seems to be angry with Nathan and he thinks he can use that to neutralize Don’s guilt. As Duke puts it “So, you’re going to act like a jerk.”

Nathan goes to talk to Don and things get tense. At one point Nathan is smoking, and not in a good way!

While Nathan is dealing with Don, Jordan shows up, and tries to insert herself into the situation. In what seems to be a recurring theme in this episode, Duke now gets in her face. Figuratively, of course, because you don’t want to get too close to Jordan! He pulls a gun out of his pocket and practically growls: Now you leave Nathan alone.

Be still my Haven heart! This bromance is going to end me.

Up on the hill, Nathan is telling Don that bad things happen to good people and “I lost my partner too” which, of course, he did! His words seem to have a soothing effect and soon Don is being taken away, hopefully to a fireproof room!

Things are getting crazy in Lexie’s little corner of the world as Sinister and Heavy (thank you, Nora Zuckerman for giving me something to call them!) flank William and prepare to haul him out of there. As they head for the door Lexie tries to get some of the other bar patrons to intervene on William’s behalf. As they begin to slink away and William is being led to the door you can see panic, and then resolve in her eyes and then – HOLY LIAM NEESON! In 10 seconds flat (or thereabouts) Lexie reassembles the gun, points, and shoots a hole in the doorframe next to Heavy. The three men freeze, and then turn around. “Let him go!”

Heavy takes a step back toward Lexie telling her to put the gun down. She does, sort of, by dropping the barrel a few feet and shooting at the floor! She grinds out: Get out of my bar! Seeing no alternative they go, leaving William who asks Lexie: Still think you’re just a bartender?

Back in Haven, Jennifer is helping Nathan adjusts the bandages on his singed hands (I told you he was smoking!) and worries she might be hurting him. Nathan lets her know about his Trouble and she figures out he is the boy from the sledding accident. The two bond over the knowledge that they are okay with not being normal.

At The Gull there is some drunken airing of Daddy issues (Wade) worrying (Duke) and menacing (Vince and the Guard.) When Duke has had enough he wanders out back to find Jennifer dumping her pills off the deck into the water. He jokes that instead of throwing them out she could have given them to him for recreational purposes. She indicates her acceptance of the fact she is not crazy, she is Troubled.

Duke: And Troubled we can fix. Usually.

The episode ends with Lexie demanding answers from William, who states cryptically: If I tell you, there is no going back.

@ Bine: Erstmal herzlichen Dank für die Mühe und die Zeit, die du momentan hier in die vierte Staffel investierst! Wirklich großartige Bilder und eine schöne Zusammenfassung der zweiten Folge. Hast du sie denn mittlerweile eigentlich auch schon sehen können?

Ich bin nach wie vor begeistert vom Auftakt der Staffel!
Was nach Sichtung der zweiten Folge klar wird, ist der Umstand, daß die Troubles zunächst in den Hintergrund rücken und vordergründig die Beziehungen der Charaktere untereinander und die Ereignisse der letzten sechs Monate in Haven in ihrer Tiefendimension ausgelotet werden.

Natürlich hat man das in gewisser Weise zwar auch erwartet, aber die Art und Weise der Produzenten, die wohl dosierte Streuung einzelner Details und das Tangieren von Grenzen, die erneute Fragen aufwerfen, ohne diese gleich in Hektik überschreiten zu müssen, ist wieder einmal phänomenal.

Da die obligatorischen Troubles jeder Einzelfolge deshalb zunächst hinter das eigentliche Geschehen zurücktreten müssen, setzt man hier zu Beginn der Staffel auch bewußt auf eher unspektakuläre Fähigkeiten der Betroffenen. So findet sich in Folge zwei erneut eine Anspielung auf die erste Staffel (hier: Folge 8 "Tödlicher Schatten"), indem ein junger Feuerwehrmann dafür verantwortlich ist, daß Menschen zu Asche/Staub zerfallen. Hier spielen vor allem noch emotionale Elemente eines Familiendramas eine Rolle, die auch sehr wohl aus dem Serienauftakt bekannt sind.

Daß dabei das spektakuläre Element außen vor gelassen wird, tut der Qualität der Folge aber keineswegs einen Abbruch. Im Gegenteil: So findet sich mehr Raum für die Einführung neuer und der Wiederbelebung alter Charaktere. Ich ziele hiermit bewußt auf William (Colin ist einfach großartig!) und Lexie. Nach wie vor sehe ich in Lexie immer noch zu sehr unsere liebe alte Audrey (Lighthouse wird mir jetzt wieder auf die Finger hauen :D ), nicht zuletzt dank der Szene, in der sie wie in den guten alten Zeiten "ihre" Pistole zusammenbaut. @ Lighty: Ja es stimmt natürlich...Lucy und Sarah hatten diese Fähigkeiten auch ;)
Aber ich werde mich schon noch mit Lexie anfreunden :D Emily spielt natürlich großartig wie immer...daran bleibt kein Zweifel!

William ist noch ein kleines Rätsel. Mittlerweile wissen wir, daß er Lexie und ihre Vorgängerinnen kennt und ihr auch unverblümt anbietet, sie aufzuklären. Aber wie oben schon zu lesen war: "There´s no going back", falls Lexie darauf eingeht. In Anbetracht der Tatsache, daß William Lexie nach Haven führen möchte (und sicher auch wird) mit Blick auf Staffel 1-3 kann ich nur noch unschwer daran zweifeln, daß William die Reinkarnation von Agent Howard ist bzw. eben JENE Person, die das Schicksal dieser Frau seit jeher begleitet und sie immer wieder aufs Neue nach Haven zurückführt. Wenn wir auch bisher immer nur Agent Howard in dieser Person gesehen haben, so ist doch durch sein Verschwinden plausibel, daß er die Gestalt gewandelt haben könnte und nun wieder als William aufgetaucht ist...soweit die Theorie. Ich hoffe, dafür in Kürze eine Bestätigung zu erhalten ;)

Oh danke der "Kritik" zur 2. Folge. Nein, gesehen habe ich davon noch nichts. Die 3. Staffel gab es recht schnell bei Youtube, aber diesmal traut sich wohl niemand die Folgen dort hoch zu laden.

Ja manchmal geht es ganz fix und zu anderen Zeiten dauert es immer ewig. Wäre ja auch nicht das Problem, wenn Ausstrahlung bzw. Veröffentlichung in Deutschland nicht immer so lange dauern würde...

Auch diese folge habe ich jetzt gesehen. In Erinnerung ist mir vorallem Lexie geblieben....wahnsinn wie schnell sie die Waffe zusammen gesetzt hatte und schießne konnte sie auch. In dem Moment war ihr das nochnicht bewusst was sie da genau gemacht hat. Ich bin wirklich gespannt wie das alles weiter geht.
Ichhoffe ich bekomme das auch noch mal in deutsch zu sehen, denn alles verstehen tue ich sicher nicht.

Ja eben...Nathan hat seit Serienbeginn immer eine tragende Rolle für die Stadt und ihren Schutz gespielt. Das scheinen manche zu vergessen. Auch wenn Nathan mittlerweile von einigen verachtet wird - gut, man muß auch eingestehen, daß er im Finale der dritten Staffel nicht unbedingt korrekt gehandelt hat (allerdings wirklich sein einziger rein von Emotionen getriebener Fehler im bisherigen Serienverlauf) -, so ist er doch schon immer Teil dieser Stadt und mit den Betroffenen eng verbunden. Das kann Jordan von sich schließlich nicht behaupten. Die "Guard" scheint den Sturz und "Machtverlust" Nathans nutzen zu wollen, doch ist die Rolle Nathans einfach zu zentral, um dies langfristig in einer Endgültigkeit zuzulassen.

Und hier auch noch eine Frage @ alle, die nur Episode 1 + 2 kennen: Was denkt ihr über William? Wer ist er und was könnte er beabsichtigen ;)?

Naja...nachdem Nathan aufgrund seines fatalen Fehlers am Ende der dritten Staffel aus Haven vertrieben wurde, scheint sich die "Guard" in den darauffolgenden sechs Monaten eine gewisse Machtposition als "Sittenwächter" erarbeitet zu haben - also noch stärker als sie es zuvor schon waren. Vor allem konnten sie Nathan schließlich als Sündenbock hinstellen und ihm somit seines Ansehens berauben. Auch wenn die "Guard" im Prinzip - zumindest nach außen hin - die Betroffenen schützen möchte, haben sie doch nun mehr Entscheidungsgewalt als vorher. Denn bis zur dritten Staffel war es noch Nathan, der als Chief immer wieder ein Riegel vor übereilte Aktionen der "Guard" geschoben hat. Doch seit seiner Rückkehr erarbeitet sich Nathan ja seine alte Stellung Stück für Stück zurück. Das meinte ich lediglich mit "Machtstellung" ;)

Ja manchmal komme ich selbst schon mit den ganzen Theorien durcheinander :D

Die vierte Staffel hat da nochmal einige neue Perspektiven geschaffen ;)
